Why We Don’t Fit Customer-Supplied Parts at E&J Jarvis (And Why It Matters)
At E&J Jarvis, we’re proud to be a trusted garage serving drivers across Southampton since 1947. Over the years, one question we’re asked fairly often is:
“Can I bring my own parts and just pay you for the labour?”
While it might seem like a harmless way to save money, the reality is a bit more complicated. Here’s why we don’t fit customer-supplied parts — and how this policy actually protects you, your vehicle, and your wallet in the long run.
Quality Control Matters
When we supply a part, we know exactly where it’s come from. We use trusted suppliers and only fit OEM parts that we’re confident in, based on years of experience and manufacturer recommendations.
When you bring your own part — especially if it’s purchased online — we can’t vouch for the quality, compatibility, or authenticity. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of poor-quality or counterfeit parts out there that may not perform properly, or worse, may cause further damage.
We Take Responsibility for the Whole Job
If something goes wrong with a part we’ve supplied and fitted, we’ll sort it as part of our 1 year guarantee on parts AND labour.
But if a customer-supplied part fails, or causes issues down the line, it creates a grey area. Is it a faulty part? Was it installed incorrectly? Was it the wrong specification? These situations can be frustrating for both you and us — and they put everyone in an awkward position.
By supplying the part ourselves, we take full responsibility for both parts and labour, giving you peace of mind and proper warranty protection.
Time is money for you and us
Sometimes (often) customer-supplied parts are incorrect — even when the listing says they’ll fit your vehicle. We’ve seen it all: wrong size brake discs, incorrect sensors, incompatible filters… the list goes on.
When that happens, your car is already in pieces on the ramp, your appointment slot is wasted, and we’re left waiting for a replacement that could take days. This delays your repair, adds cost for you and us, and takes time away from other customers.
Using parts we have sourced through trusted suppliers means we get the right part the first time — and on the rare occasion it's not right, we can sort it quickly at no extra cost to you.
We Stand by Our Work
We built our reputation in Southampton by being fair, reliable, and doing the job properly. That means we only work with parts we trust, and we stand by every repair we carry out.
Fitting unverified customer supplied parts compromises that — and ultimately, it means we can’t give you the guarantee or level of service that we’re proud to offer every customer.
It’s Not Just Policy — It’s Protection
We know some garages might take on work with customer-supplied parts, but at E&J Jarvis, our policy is simple:
We supply the parts, we fit them, and we take full responsibility for the job.
It’s not about making an extra few quid — it’s about doing the job right, protecting your vehicle, and keeping our standards (and yours) high.
